In search of new inspiration and a break from studio production, Jen Swearington has traveled to twelve countries in the past two years for month-long art residencies. Nestled within her carry-on suitcase beside a few clothes and shoes are her tiny art kit, cutting mat, stack of colored paper, and a fresh sketchbook. Through her travels, she is creating a compelling new body of work drawn from life abroad: dozens of sketches and witty observations, papercut shadow sculptures, and multi-layered, illustrated carousel books. Her longest stints have been in Bulgaria, Mexico, Greece, and Finland; her journey continues stateside on the Carolina coast into 2020 and beyond.
